7.5 AT856.3 22m Drifters

Hall C. Wolfe Shelter

I have run into a handfull of drifters. These people get on the trail rather than assimilate in society, pay rent, hold a steady job. One works and then gets back on the trail or on any trail wherever part of the country he finds interesting to explore. He has thru hiked the AT in 2014. Now he is hiking from Harpers Ferry to Springer Mountain. Then he'll go to key west Florida and work with a friend. Another hiked in 10miles and slept for two days at the same Shelter. He seemed to live on any Trail and claimed to find $50/hr roofing jobs to cover his food costs. He has been on the trail for 2 weeks and is planning to go to Arizona and get on a trail there.

Another young man spent 3 years traveling around the country after he graduated from college. He got hired as a math teacher and is section hiking the trail over spring break. He had signed up for his masters but his advisor talked him into doing a PHD math program cause its cheaper. I don't understand...another of life's drifters. No real plan in place..For some reason it bothers me.

I met retired couple on the trail for a day hike. They were happy and had traveled the country after they worked and raised their children. They gave me a homemade chocolate Easter egg and Dan a package of Gouda cheese. We enjoy talking to people on the trail and on our resupplies. It cuts into our time on the trail. But we learn from them and they from us.

It was a good day. Though we stopped 2miles short of our goal we picked up a great tent sight by a big babbling mountain stream.

Dan and I are working hard and enjoying the once in a lifetime trip.
